Trouble of the Best Kind

It seems I can't go anywhere without getting into trouble! Don't worry dolls, it's trouble of the best kind. ; ) And I have very exciting news!

I've been hired to put on a Burlesque Show at a private function! I'm glad that you can't see me dancing around the room like a maniac, I just can't contain my excitement. More details to follow about this booking but I can tell you that the theme is 1920's.

So of course I popped into the Foxy Shoppe to see if they had anything I could use, and to browse their new spring stock! I completely forgot that there is no such thing as 'browsing' when it comes to the Shoppe. I just had to try on the cutest outfit and wouldn't you know it? Shelley Hook, a friend of Miss Foxy's and the photographer behind Off The HOOK Productions, was there - with her brand new camera in hand! Needless to say, a little bit of FOXY mayhem ensued.

Of course, the next time I pop into the Shoppe I'll conveniently 'forget' that browsing isn't possible. Really, life is more fun that way.

Saucily yours!

Drawn & Plastered: Talent Hunt Review

The idea of a craft sale and a performance at the same time is genius. Drawn & Plastered's Hunt for Talent was just that. The crafters in the back were crafty; the talent in the front was entertaining. The venue was interesting. Juss Jazz is very long and very narrow which worked well as a counter separated the room in the middle, making two cozier spaces for the sale and the show. I didn't get to stay for as long as I would have liked due to a headache but this is what I got to experience:

The crafters were amazing! Talk about talent! There was a chain mail booth as well as a steampunk jewelry table. Randy Randell makes Thorgrid Jewelry and if you or a loved one likes this crazy crazy thing called steampunk then a piece from him is an awesome gift idea. There was also a homemade knitted baby Cthulhu rattle. Heather Bays said it was a popular seller among males - uncles and the like. Males? If I ever become the godmother/aunt/babysitter or official bad influence of a child they are ALL getting CTHULHU RATTLES. You can thank me now.

The most breathtaking table had hand tooled leather corsets! Shauna Davidson is the artisan behind WildeMaide LeatherCraft. I was already planning a steampunk outfit for Comicon (omg nerd I know) and these fit in perfectly with my idea! Plus I already dress like it's Halloween every other day of the year so I'll be able to incorporate it into my everyday wardrobe.

The talent included a magic show - who doesn't love a good old fashioned parlour trick? There was a really neat one with a five dollar bill appearing out of a piece of cheese. There was also a musician by the name of Scarlet O'Hara who looked like a member from Kiss and who sang/rasped his way through a few rock songs.

By that point my migraine was in full swing and I had to leave the venue due to nausea and swimming vision. I should really pay better attention to my body's 'slow down' signs but then life would be really, really boring. I didn't have the energy to perform and I really wish I could have but the fourteen hours of sleep that followed when I got home was a magic act in itself. ; )

The Queen of Hearts garter by Glass Coffin Designs. Yum!

The winners of the Talent Hunt were first place: Andrea Marincil with Glass Coffin Designs and second place: Sarah Putnam singing Back in Black. I'm sorry I missed out on their acts!

Andrea Marincil designs lingerie meant to look and feel vintage. You can look through her amazing artistry at Glass Coffin Designs or check out her work on Facebook.

Fascination with Fascinators

Fascinators fascinate me.

I started collecting/wearing them a few years ago and the longer I wear them the more outrageous they get. For those who are unsure of what a fascinator is they're an ornamental hair piece and can consist of feathers, veils, flowers, jewels and any sort of thing you can think of. Most people will recognize them because Kate Middleton started wearing them during her engagement. All of a sudden everywhere I went I was bombarded with "Oh, you must be a big fan of the royal couple!" Please. Kate Middleton was imitating me.

Kidding! Fascinators date back centuries and in a decadent time were considered modest decoration. In today's fashion world they were being worn by likes of Dita Von Teese and other alternative models before Kate Middleton brought them mainstream. But then I guess if you look at it the other way around, the Queen was wearing them before Dita so maybe she took her cues from royalty. For a delightful write up on the history of fascinators you should visit Ooh La La Plume.

Sometimes my friends ask me how I'm so brave and say that they wish they had the guts to wear whatever they want. It's not really bravery. It's not giving a fuck. I tried to write that in a less offensive manner but really, there's no other way to word it. I've had people laugh and clap with delight when they see what I'm wearing. I've also had people ask why I'm wearing a bird on my head with scorn. Well let me tell you, life is too short to care about the people who think you're wearing a bird on your head. The people that you want to associate with are the people who will love your outfits when you go out on a limb and wear what you want. Kind of the same way that your friends will love you for you. The moral of this story: get used to what I'm wearing- on my head or otherwise- because it's only going to get wilder from here.

And now for some fascinators:

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

No.

Drawn & Plastered Gets Saucy!

Talk about networking! One day I get exposure on the Foxy Shoppe facebook page (the SAUCY album) and the next day I get a message from a gorgeous lady asking if I would be willing to model and perform for a group called Drawn & Plastered.

It's a very good thing you can't hear me squeal via facebook.

The lovely lady was Meg Bergeron, co-founder of Drawn & Plastered. To put it simply, D&P is a gathering designed to provide a creative soul's outlet and inspiration. Once a month D&P gathers models and performers to pose for artists while they create. These sessions are interspersed with various kinds of shows, keeping with whatever the theme for the month is. Unlike other art gatherings these events are open to all kinds of artists, whether they be poets, photographers, painters, sculptors or those who sketch. There's also a wicked after party!
The next gathering is Sunday, April 29th, 6 pm - 9pm at the Cavern. Cover is $10.

Meg also introduced me to Drawn & Plastered Hunts for Talent, a talent show going on this Saturday. As in, the day after tomorrow! I have the forms all filled out and ready to go. I'm going to drop them off tomorrow and see if I can secure a last minute spot! I got out my burlesque gear and put on Ain't Misbehavin' (Dinah Washington) and my routine from the Amateur Burlesque Show Fundraiser came flooding back. You should come out to Juss Jazz @ 240 Portage Avenue Saturday from 2 pm to 6 pm! I may or may not be shimmying out of my clothes. ; ) Even if I'm not I'm sure to be there to watch all the amazing performers they have lined up!

As for the event I'll be participating in? Well, I need to keep mum on the details for now, but I can tell you these three things: it's going to be rad, rockabilly and feature a very retro me!

Keep it saucy,
Miss Scarlet

H & J's Wedding Social - The Aftermath

The social was WILD! So wild it's taken me three days to fully recover from it.

Highlights include:
  •  a conga line
  • a packed dance floor - the macarena, anyone?
  • song sing-a-longs (you make me want to SHOUT had everyone going crazy)
  • the black shirt & white tie boys. Apparently they're just a group of friends who attend socials in matching outfits and get the dance floor going. These guys were awesome!
  • homemade muffins courtesy of the Moms
  • Having the back of my hand kissed by a drunk and yet charming gentleman
  • An utterly stunning bride-to-be! She put everyone else to shame.
Zebra trim, zebra train, zebra stilettos! This lady knows how to make a statement.

<3 The Boyfriend. <3

These guys! These guys know how to party!

My outfit and my retro hairstyle were hits. Note to self - learn to do updo's! (Ponytails don't count.) Victory rolls were courtesy of Monique at Colours hair studio.

I didn't win any social prizes. I tried so hard to bribe the groom, too! ; ) I did get an enormous treat though. I posted many of these photos to Facebook and the lovely Miss Foxy asked my permission to use my photos to advertise the dress! I was- and am!- so floored by her offer. She made up an album entitled SAUCY with the caption "Winnipeg Burlesque Performer Scarlet Divine ...! Wears PINUP COUTURE WELL!" Gosh! I'm super flattered and excited that I can put this on my burlesque 'resume'. MEGA props to my awesome sis who was the photographer behind the camera for these shots.

And AGAIN! Even as I'm writing this blog I'm bombarded with kindness and support! Special thanks to Miss Foxy, burlesque artist and yogi extraordinaire Andrea Robin and photographer John Ohm for spreading the word about my up and coming Introduction to Burlesque workshop. If you aren't already sick to death of me talking about it click the link and if you like what you read then sign up! It's going to be a stimulatingly stellar evening, I guarantee.

Saucily yours,
Miss Scarlet

The Social and the Shoppe

This weekend I get to perpetuate an outstanding Manitoban tradition - that of the wedding social. H & J- my Icelandic lover and her amazing fiance- have a badass social lined up with prizes like paintball guns and a $200 gift cert to Living Canvas Tattoo. Um, awesome much? If you're interested you should drop by Vince Leah Community Centre tomorrow night. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Other than my super sexy friend getting married, one of the best things about this social is the excuse to buy a new dress! And really, I didn't have to look very hard. I've been lusting after the Erin dress at The Foxy Shoppe for months now. I tried it on in fire engine red and another dress in red with black polka dots but this dress is just - amazing -. The most gorgeous dress. I feel like a retro vixen in it! The Boyfriend is hoping to win a social prize but if he's really lucky he'll get to go home with me at the end of the night.

Image belongs to PinupGirlClothing.com Can you imagine, fire engine red??

One of the best features of the Shoppe is the owner, Miss Foxy a.k.a. Pamela Fox. While you're in the store she is your own personal cheer leader. After an hour with her upbeat personality and compliments I felt like I'd run a marathon and won the Nobel prize. Shopping there is an experience. I don't feel like I can love this store enough. Winnipeg is so lucky to have a boutique like this! And their spring stock is just around the corner. ;) Plus they left me mouth watering with their show girl lingerie line, which features nickel sized sequins in hot colours like magenta and gold with emerald and purple on their way!

Of course my new dress can't compete with the bride-to-be's. It's floor length hot pink with zebra straps and a zebra train paired with zebra stiletto's. WOW.

Now I know what you're thinking - pics or it didn't happen! But these dresses will make their grande debuts at tomorrow night's social and I promise, there will be pictures galore!

Stay Saucy ; )

Goddess Night Out

In general I like to think that this is a blog of pretty things. But you know what's not very pretty? Mono. I've had mono for a few weeks now and it's ugly, to say the least. Worse than the flu like symptoms is the utter exhaustion. Most days I've felt like I've run a marathon without actually doing anything at all. This left me with a problem: How can I write about anything interesting when nothing interesting has been happening with me?

Nothing interesting? Hah! I was reflecting today and I realized I have so much going on! One of the most exciting things coming up is an Introduction to Burlesque workshop hosted by yours truly!

How is that not super exciting?!? I blame my mono-fogged brain for not writing about it sooner!

I'm not Dita but hopefully I can make you feel like her after you take my workshop!

Polefit Canada- an amazing organization offering everything from pole dancing and zumba to intense ab workouts and 90 day health challenges- is starting what they call Goddess Night(s) Out! These nights are filled with various workshops designed to bring out the Goddess in you by being sexy, uplifting and most importantly fun!

And as the very first workshop I've been asked delve into beautiful art of burlesque. I'll be covering the basic moves found in most burlesque routines, how to put together a costume, the history behind Neo-burlesque (which is what performers today are showcasing) and, if you're too shy to take to the stage, how to set up your own personal burlesque show for an audience of one! ;)  After learning some of the building block moves we'll put together a routine that all you sexy ladies can take home and show off. I'm so excited for this! I think it's going to be a blast!

You can see the poster for it here. To register email info@polefitcanada.ca or call 204-421-9040

P.S. - Did you know it's my birthday? If you'd really like to make my day, register for my workshop! <3
