Break a Nipple! (Intro to Burlesque Workshop)

My Introduction to Burlesque workshop came and went and I am utterly exhausted.

I have to admit I ran the full gammut of emotions with this one. Exhilaration, amazement, bursting positivity, determination, self doubt, nervousness, downright terror. I've lead workshops before, in school and what not. Speaking in front of people is something I've pushed myself to do all my life so it's not so much an obstacle. It's more like old hat. So why the nerves?

I desperately wanted people to have fun. And while I was confidant that I could teach what I wanted people to learn and convey my information in a clear and coherent manner that doesn't necessarily make a workshop a good time. But! Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I screwed my courage to the sticking point and away we went.

The gorgeous new facilities at Polefit Canada!

Firstly I was surprised at how many people showed up! There were eleven participants plus me, so twelve total. Then there the age range. The ladies who attended were anywhere from 18 to 50 (maybe older? But they sure didn't look it!) I was worried about attendance because for the longest time there were only three participants registered. I ended up roping my Mom into coming to fill out the numbers. I expected that to be a little bit awkward but as there was no nudity (we practiced taking off gloves, scarves and high heels) my Mom was totally relaxed and we both had a good time making eye contact and giggling. At one point she whipped out her ponytail and shook out her hair like being a sex siren was old hat to her. That wasn't a side of my Mom I'd ever seen before and I loved being there to witness her as a woman first, a mother second.

K and K, two friends of mine, also came and had a blast! I was incredibly grateful to have familiar faces in my first workshop and being able to sneak up and whisper 'how'm I doing?' kept me rolling. I was super impressed with both of them! One K knew how to drop it like it's hawt - her booty pop put everyone else to shame. Other K took the moves I taught and put her own ballet spin on them. I swear the way arched over her chair and gracefully highlighted her form with a falling hand was straight out of the movie Black Swan. That's what I love most about burlesque- dance background, no dance background, it doesn't make a difference. Every woman moves differently and every woman showcases her own personality through her movements. I loved seeing the ladies in my workshop free of constraints.

It was pretty much this but with boas.

Carolyne, owner of PolefitCanada, attended the workshop and gave me some great feedback about formatting the next one (oy vey, were my feet killing me! More sit, less stand next time for sure!) Also having pre-made name tags with Burlesque names on them so ladies don't have to stress about making one up would have been stellar. I totally didn't think of that, but given extra time to prepare I could come up with a whole range of naughty names.

Workshop facilitator. That is so going on my resume. ;-D

Stay Saucy,

H & J's Wedding Social - The Aftermath

The social was WILD! So wild it's taken me three days to fully recover from it.

Highlights include:
  •  a conga line
  • a packed dance floor - the macarena, anyone?
  • song sing-a-longs (you make me want to SHOUT had everyone going crazy)
  • the black shirt & white tie boys. Apparently they're just a group of friends who attend socials in matching outfits and get the dance floor going. These guys were awesome!
  • homemade muffins courtesy of the Moms
  • Having the back of my hand kissed by a drunk and yet charming gentleman
  • An utterly stunning bride-to-be! She put everyone else to shame.
Zebra trim, zebra train, zebra stilettos! This lady knows how to make a statement.

<3 The Boyfriend. <3

These guys! These guys know how to party!

My outfit and my retro hairstyle were hits. Note to self - learn to do updo's! (Ponytails don't count.) Victory rolls were courtesy of Monique at Colours hair studio.

I didn't win any social prizes. I tried so hard to bribe the groom, too! ; ) I did get an enormous treat though. I posted many of these photos to Facebook and the lovely Miss Foxy asked my permission to use my photos to advertise the dress! I was- and am!- so floored by her offer. She made up an album entitled SAUCY with the caption "Winnipeg Burlesque Performer Scarlet Divine ...! Wears PINUP COUTURE WELL!" Gosh! I'm super flattered and excited that I can put this on my burlesque 'resume'. MEGA props to my awesome sis who was the photographer behind the camera for these shots.

And AGAIN! Even as I'm writing this blog I'm bombarded with kindness and support! Special thanks to Miss Foxy, burlesque artist and yogi extraordinaire Andrea Robin and photographer John Ohm for spreading the word about my up and coming Introduction to Burlesque workshop. If you aren't already sick to death of me talking about it click the link and if you like what you read then sign up! It's going to be a stimulatingly stellar evening, I guarantee.

Saucily yours,
Miss Scarlet

Goddess Night Out

In general I like to think that this is a blog of pretty things. But you know what's not very pretty? Mono. I've had mono for a few weeks now and it's ugly, to say the least. Worse than the flu like symptoms is the utter exhaustion. Most days I've felt like I've run a marathon without actually doing anything at all. This left me with a problem: How can I write about anything interesting when nothing interesting has been happening with me?

Nothing interesting? Hah! I was reflecting today and I realized I have so much going on! One of the most exciting things coming up is an Introduction to Burlesque workshop hosted by yours truly!

How is that not super exciting?!? I blame my mono-fogged brain for not writing about it sooner!

I'm not Dita but hopefully I can make you feel like her after you take my workshop!

Polefit Canada- an amazing organization offering everything from pole dancing and zumba to intense ab workouts and 90 day health challenges- is starting what they call Goddess Night(s) Out! These nights are filled with various workshops designed to bring out the Goddess in you by being sexy, uplifting and most importantly fun!

And as the very first workshop I've been asked delve into beautiful art of burlesque. I'll be covering the basic moves found in most burlesque routines, how to put together a costume, the history behind Neo-burlesque (which is what performers today are showcasing) and, if you're too shy to take to the stage, how to set up your own personal burlesque show for an audience of one! ;)  After learning some of the building block moves we'll put together a routine that all you sexy ladies can take home and show off. I'm so excited for this! I think it's going to be a blast!

You can see the poster for it here. To register email info@polefitcanada.ca or call 204-421-9040

P.S. - Did you know it's my birthday? If you'd really like to make my day, register for my workshop! <3
