Art Modelling

A couple years ago I decided to go out on a limb and try to get over my body shyness in a rather extreme way. Art modelling! The WAG is always looking for models for their life drawing classes. I was nervous as all heck! But I wanted to model so I took the plunge. The signing up was relatively painless. I walked into the art space, spoke to the receptionist, she gave me a couple forms to fill out and voila. I got a call the next week. Oh boy - what had I gotten myself into?

I arrived fifteen minutes early to talk to the instructor. He walked me through the set up of the class - ten one minute poses, a couple of five minute poses, a couple of ten minute ones. One fifteen minute pose and then break. The second half of the class was one solid pose for an hour. And yes, I was nude. Yes, all the artists were old dudes. Yes, it was freaking cold. But the instructor said "you're nervous for the first fifteen seconds and after that you start to think about how boring your pose is, or if your arm is falling asleep." And that's absolutely true.

The whole experience was a roller coaster of nerves, boredom and an adrenaline rush that really did serve to boost my confidence. I received a couple of sketches that were and were not me. My dog later ate them but canines have no appreciation of art. The Instructor also mentioned that a lot of the models have mentioned being or wanting to be burlesque performers. I guess we're all just nudists at heart.

Not from the WAG but an artists rendition all the same (c)David Oro

I've signed on to do a few more art modelling sessions this spring ... partly because it's a second job and partly because I want to feel like I'm doing something to benefit the artistic community this grey, icky February. I'm modelling for a figure drawing class for a grades 11 and 12 students at the WAG. The funniest thing was walking in a seeing that they were all asians.... so tiny. They looked like they were 13, max.

This class was different in that I had to hold one pose for two hours. I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be able to do that but you never know until you try. The class was for two hours and I amazed myself by not taking a break until an hour and fifteen mins had gone by. A quick two minute stretch got the blood flowing back into my feet and hands and worked out the crimps in my back and neck. Then back to sitting. I took a five min bathroom break with twenty mins to go. The last ten mins were brutal because I knew I was going to be able to move soon so it was difficult to zone out and be still.

Immortalized as a penny dreadful cover by (c)Kenneth Porhownik

The studio sits the model under a giant lamp so that artists can pick up the details of light and shadow. It's really warm, but only where it touches you. The rest of the studio isn't heated for naked people. The result was I was sweating profusely but only my upper body was overly warm. My hands and feet had gone numb from the cold.

It's that same initial "Oh my god everyone is going to be judging me, I'm unattractive why am I doing this - did I remember to shave this morning???" After two minutes of quiet sketching with the instructor going from pupil to pupil and using technical jargon about charcoal and shading sitting nude in a room full of strangers becomes somehow ... mundane. It's a nice way to meditate really. I'm usually to jittery or busy to sit still.

If I were a doll.

And afterwards seeing their works is really cool. They somehow are me but look nothing like me: I've become a kind of mythical art figure on canvas while the real me gratefully puts on clothes and walks back out to the sounds of traffic, the slush on the sidewalk and a quiet joy of being hyper aware of my body and the luxury of moving.

Stay saucy,
Miss Scarlet

My First Ever Photoshoot

I was thinking the other day that a year ago I had never done burlesque and hadn't quite dipped my toes into modelling either. How the heck did it all happen? These are things that I'd been wanting to do for years and I'm so glad I finally got the ball rolling. So for posterities sake, and for anyone else who, like me, had no idea how to jump in, here's how I made my splash.

I was chatting with a friend over tea and we were both thinking of modelling and we'd both heard good things about a website that connects people in the industry. I'd heard about it through internet friends who were also interested in burlesque/pinups and modelling is a cool way to show off your burlesque outfits as you come up with them. So we both signed up for ModelMayhem.com. And what do you know, we were both messaged by Brad Mazur. He was looking for models for a project on eyes and we were looking for experience. After talking it over with him we decided that we'd do our first photoshoot together. We were both super nervous and a little awkward in front of the camera but he was easy going and knew his stuff, and he put us right at ease. And his project turned out really cool!

Eyes really are the windows to the soul.

As a photographer for a first time model he was perfect. For days after the shoot I was on a creative high. So when he asked me if I'd be interested in working with him again of course I jumped at the chance! This time he was really playing with the concept of light and dark.

Since signing up for ModelMayhem I've met some really cool people including photographers, other models, hair stylists, make up artists and all the other behind the scenes people who are  super creative and good at what they do. I've also made some pretty rad friends. Seriously, no one loves playing dress up with you as much as another model or a photographer.

So there's how I did it; what's stopping you?

Bond & Burlesque

Today I am blogging about ...

THIS:

Put on by THIS GUY:
The one on the right, though the one on the left is dashing too ;-)

A couple of months ago King Cabernet, a suave and debonair DJ (see above photo), messaged me about performing in a Bond and Burlesque tribute event that coincided with the opening of Skyfall - the latest James Bond movie for those of you who are not cinematically inclined. Seeing as how I'd been listening to Adele's latest single, also called Skyfall, almost constantly in anticipation of more Daniel Craig yummyness I didn't see how I could say no. After organizing my own show on Hallowe'en it was so nice to have an event that I just had to show up to and titillate. Not that that's a hard job - King Cabernet throws only the coolest gigs I've been to and everyone who shows up is exactly the crowd that a burly girl could hope for.

The burly girls before the show. Yours truly, Miss Ruby Red Lips & Miss La Muse

There was a massive snowfall that night. I know, snow - in Winnipeg? Get outta town. *eye roll* But even though it comes every year it still wreaks havoc with our sense of time. I left the house an hour before I was supposed to arrive but still ended up being late. As did quite a few others. But our clever host had scheduled everything on the late side so by the time it was showtime Juss Jazz was packed! And I mean shoulder to shoulder, back to front! If you've never been to Juss Jazz it's a sweet little place, very long and narrow. There's a tiny little corner stage at the front of the room, which just wouldn't do, so we appropriated the doorway/first section of the dance floor for our shimmies and shakes. The problem with the narrowness of the place is that after four rows of people you only caught glimpses of arms or the occasional flash of boa. My man, who was about halfway to the back of the room stood on a chair to see my routine (like he doesn't get an eyeful at home ;p).

This is where I love to be!

A friend of mine wiggled her way to the front with only minor use of elbows to see me dance and then we slipped back through the crowd when I was done. My only regret is that after moving out of the way for the other viewers (and to get dressed without scrutiny - putting clothes on is rarely as scintillating as taking them off) I didn't get to watch Miss Ruby or Angela perform. I did see Miss Ruby's costume, an amazing creation of white feathers and sparkling diamond which went perfectly with her song: Diamonds are Forever. The fact that she made her own costume was just incredible and also what burlesque is supposed to be all about. I'll get around to costume creation when school is done, I pinky swear! Angela's costume included an elegant full length girdle which was so lovely. She did a simmering dance to a slowed down version of the James Bond theme song. My own song, Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang by Shirley Bassey is a dark and naughty ode to 007, which made it absolutely perfect for me.

The lady on the left just makes this picture for me :-D

I have to admit that going into the night I wasn't confident in my routine. I've been stressed out with school and work lately. As a result my creative juices were running a little low. That being said the music started playing and my body just grooved without instruction. Sometimes as a dancer you feel like you become the music and this was one of those nights. That feeling is the main reason why I dance. So I owe a big thank-you to King Cabernet for setting up such a wonderful night! And here's a shout out for his next awesome event:
SHINDIG!

If you're not doing anything this Saturday night you should go and get your groove on!

Miss Scarlet

August Aspirations

Recently I applied to be a participant in two events put on by the Central Canadian Centre for Performance. I wrote an entry for their online zine, KATALOG, and I applied to participate in their Alter Ego Pageant. I was invited to both of these events on Facebook. The lovely Lizzie Lala graciously passed the info along.

I sent in an article to KATALOG, the Official publication for the Central Canadian Centre for Performance. (It can be found at cccponline.net.) It was looking for "performance photos, videos and write ups about Altered Ego or extensions of the self in performance." I ended up sending in six or seven photos to go along with the article because it was so hard to choose just a couple!

The idea behind KATALOG is very cool. Instead of repeating everything the Zine says about itself on their website I'm going to quote parts of their Submission Call. "KATALOG is an online publication with video and sound capabilities which is dedicated to the practice of performance and live art."

The site doesn't say whether or not I'll be notified if they choose my submission or when the next issue is set to be published. I'll wait until Sept before sending them an inquiry. I was really nervous about sending in my entry as there are so many performers in the world who are both more established/polished and who are better known. But you never know if you don't try, so I screwed my courage to the sticking point and sent it anyways. If my article isn't published it'll make a good blog post. :-)
Photos taken from cccponline.net

I also entered the CCCP's Alter Ego Pageant, where contestants will be judged on their alter egos. The contest includes a talent and a beauty portion. The talent part is easy - one burlesque routine, coming up! The beauty bit? A "birthday/bathing suit" competition. Yikes! I don't know how I feel about the beauty portion of the event but I think I'm going to get creative and flaunt Miss Scarlet's beauty ideals. I don't know what those are, exactly, as they range from raunchy to classy and back again! The Pageant is to be held on Sept. 8th. I'll let you know if I'm selected to be one of the participants!

Dano Tanaka: Photographer Extraordinaire

Miss Pamela Fox strikes again! This past June a mysterious photographer named Dano Tanaka contacted Miss Foxy via facebook to see if he could use her studio for a shoot. His gentlemanly charm- and tattoos- endeared him to her so she suggested on The Foxy Shoppe facebook profile that people like his page. I took a look, liked what I saw, sent him a message saying so and clicked 'like'. He took the time to thank me for my comment - and oh, I'm a burlesque dancer? Would I be interested in modeling for him? You bet I was! So wham, bam, thank-you ma'am - a date was set. The magical Miss Foxy brings people together.

Magical things always happen at The Foxy Shoppe

Dano and I met up at the Forks and walked along the river path and gardens. It's such a gorgeous place I'm surprised there aren't more people there taking pictures at all times. The pictures themselves have a very romantic feel to them, with long grass and flowers in the forefront and me in the distance. They're almost fairy like which made me giddy and excited when I got peeks of them on his camera. I can hardly wait to see the finished photos!
Sneak peak! More to come!

Dano is incredibly easy to talk to. He's full of stories regarding his travels and his work, as well as various people he's met and worked with since he started photography. He really put me at ease. I remember being  impressed with the way he worked. Not only does he have a knack for capturing the best angle but he was confidant about giving directions about how I should position my body when he wanted a certain look. Not hesitant, not bossy, just matter of fact and a true pleasure to work with. He's currently traveling across Canada for work but scheduled to be back in Winnipeg come September! Meaning: contact him now or you'll miss out on your chance to work with this awesome guy! Check out Dano Tanaka Illustrator on facebook. He's trying to get 1000 'likes' by the end of this year, so if you like his work- you know what to do!

This gorgeous photo is part of his Pin Up Marathon series in Edmonton, Alberta.

One of the things we talked about was how we're both just beginning to establish ourselves in our fields of choice and we agreed, at some point you just have to put yourself out there. It is incredibly exhilarating to do what you love. After spending the morning modelling for Dano I was so pumped I felt like I could take on the world. It's sometimes hard to remember this feeling when I get down on myself, as everyone does, but the sense of accomplishment I get when I model or do a show makes me soar. I never would have guessed five years ago that I could possibly do the awesome things I'm up to right now.

So don't just dream. Grab hold of them with both hands and mud wrestle those dreams into existence. As T. E. Lawrence said, "All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible". Dangerous? My middle name.

Rockabilly Event - Part Two

Hairspray, corsets and greasers, oh my! I decided to go with a more metal-rock sound for my rockabilly burlesque routine, though there was definitely banjo in it! The song was Black Betty by Spiderbait. It was a knee high leather boots and crop meets hot pink sequined show girl ensemble and it went a little something like this:

This one is awesome because if you look closely my reflection is also blowing a kiss on the big screen. Look ma! I'm on TV! ;)

It was really interesting dancing on the same level as the audience. Usually you're higher up with blinding stage lights in your eyes. This time I could see every face of every person watching me ... and they were five steps away from me at any time. This turned out to be to my advantage, however, when I sped up my routine! Oops. I guess I was just so excited I frenzied myself out of tempo. However, a little improvisation and a lot of flirting-which Meg got the brunt of- managed to end the last little bit of the song on a credible note. Thanks for playing along Meg!

If you could take a minute to go and show these wonderful photographers some love I would be incredibly grateful. Brad Mazur, Holly Halftone and Joel Nickel do amazing work.

Stay tuned for more sass!

Rockabilly Event - Part One

Alright, y'all! This post may seem a little self centered because out of all the amazing pictures taken during the  Drawn and Plastered Rockabilly show the only ones I'm going to be posting are mine. Don't like it? Stop reading my diary. ;-) There's just no room for all the incredibly lovely faces to be featured here. If you're reading this you probably came here from Facebook, in which case go here to see the Official Event album! It's probably  It IS the most gorgeous collection of people you will ever see.

Saturday, July 14th 2012: The pre-show magic happened at Rockabetty and The Foxy Shoppe, with half the group for the Drawn and Plastered Art Models and gals participating in the runway show going to each location. I was in the FS group which was delightful because a) it's one of my favourite places in Winnipeg and b) Miss Foxy just has to look at you to make you feel like a Fox. But to add a little more magic than even her bedroom eyes can muster she had two professional hair stylists and a make up artist waiting in the wings! Every runway model was provided with a dress and shoes for the evening. Miss Foxy even had a bag of false eyelashes-now that's thinking of everything! There was a long lineup of ladies waiting for beauty care so I took a front row seat in her shop mirror and did my own makeup.

Photo courtesy of Holly Halftone - super cute dress by the Foxy Shoppe!

I did however take full advantage of having a stylist do my hair. I swear she was the guardian angel of pin curls and victory rolls. She was laughing when she got to me after doing Miss Ruby Red Lips's updo because, as she told me, "I have two little girls named Scarlet and Ruby- I didn't think I named them after burlesque dancers!" It was the best way to get ready for the show. I was vibrating with nerves- a brand new routine never before seen by the public? But a group singoff of Hot Blooded by Foreigner worked out the jitters and got us all in the mood. And in case that wasn't enough sass Miss Foxy put the cherry on my sundae by lending me these:

When the magic was done we made our way in groups over to Le Garage Cafe. I drove a gal over in her own car because she was corseted in ... driving while constrained is a difficult skill to master! I know that from firsthand experience. I'd have loved to wear a corset for the evening but I was already going to be hopping in (but mostly out) of different outfits all evening. It's much easier done with zippers.

Miss La Muse caught me before my act to wish me luck. Is it just me or do we have fabulous taste in dresses?

The show started promptly at nine pm with the art models posing five minutes each. Then at nine thirty I took to the dance floor in front of the stage and performed a burlesque act to Black Betty by Spiderbait. **I realized after writing everything out and organizing all the photos that my routine would have to be in another post. Yay more blogging for me! :D**

After my routine I scurried to change back into miss Foxy's lovely dress and heels. On my way back I was drafted *cough*eagerlyvolunteered*cough* to be an art model and post for ten minutes so that various artists could sketch/draw/photograph/do their thing. Two very amazing pieces came out of this episode. The first is this sketch by pinup artist David Oro.

He complemented me on my ability to not move or twitch but the secret to that is every time he looked down to draw I would quickly shift my weight, shake my foot or give my shoulders a roll. Staying in the same position for ten minutes is harder than it looks! David absolutely made my day by meeting up with me for coffee Monday night and giving this sketch to me.  I offered to pay him but he autographed it and gave me a roguish smile, saying "I like knowing that this way my work is priceless." What a man!

The second piece is by Kenneth Porhownik who took his sketches and made them into penny dreadful novel covers. So cool!
I held my position for as long as I could but shortly thereafter the fashion show began. Models from Hungover Empire, Rockabetty and The Foxy Shoppe all lined up at the door and then cat walked down the aisle, did a saucy little turn on stage and returned. Possibly the sexiest moment of the night? Two bad ass corsetted babes strutting their stuff and then having a stare down on stage as part of the show. The heat between them almost sizzled the audience!

After the show Miss Ruby took the stage. As one fan aptly put it 'she was the embodiment of Marilyn Monroe and she had the fanbase to prove it'. Uh, yeah she is!

My favourite part of the evening was by far the best dressed contest because EVERYONE who wasn't a model was dressed up too! Everyone! It was like classy Hallowe'en had come early. With so many gorgeous  people packed into one place I'm surprised the place didn't burst into hairspray fueled flames. The contest was followed with live music by Greg Arcade and the Electrics, and the Go Go Pops with more music by DJ King Cabernet. It was one hell of an evening.

Look at this program! How amazing is that? I need to say that Meg B and Holly Halftone did a phenomenal job organizing this event. The sheer amount of hours they put in to make the event a success must have been mind numbing. Overall 115+ people decided to attend. It was a sold out show with standing room only! Since this was the last Drawn and Plastered event for the summer it was a hell of a way to end the season! The only thing that could have made it better was air conditioning. I was warmer dancing mostly naked inside than I was fully dressed outside!

So there you have it. I was a runway model, art model, burlesque dancer and mayhem partier all in one night. It was hands down the sexiest retro party Winnipeg has ever seen. Stay tuned for a breakdown of my naughty routine!

Miss Scarlet

80's Night at Skylab 17

Thursday evening I was sitting at home, thinking about how I didn't have any rad modelling stuff going on lately. Suddenly, lo and behold - a facebook status! Holly Halftone to the rescue! She had been contacted by a guy looking to incorporate Drawn and Plastered into his bachelor party. It was a last minute request. The theme was 80's and models were needed. As seems the case with most awesome things I was a few hours too late. She'd already found models willing to show up and be glamorous. I messaged her anyways. I love the idea behind D&P and thought hey- maybe sending a shout out will keep me on D&P's radar.

But what do you know, one of the models dropped out and Holly wondered if I could fill in!

Friday night I cabbed from work to Outworks Studio in the Exchange District where Holly Hui did some stunning hair styling. All photos were taken by the talented Holly Halftone.

It only took half a bottle of conditioner to get the knots out the next morning...
 Worth it ;)
A.J. and I "getting ready"

We were scheduled to pose from 8 - 9 pm. We scurried over to the Reagle Beagle to just make it on time. The night was slow to get started (it was dead, with the exception of the bachelor who seemed to have been having a good time for a while before we got there). To pass the time we adorned ourselves with glow sticks and played balloon volley ball.

We played around, posing for the camera and getting ready to hold poses for the artists the organizers promised were coming.

People wanted to take pictures with us - I was tickled (hot) pink!

At 10 we started our 5 minute sets. I went first. It seems, in general, that people are shy of going first, when really going first is actually the best. I volunteered right away - you get the best pick of the poses.

I could have stayed like this all night.

After everyone had done a 5 minute pose we held two group 15 minute poses. These were the hardest - at the five minute mark you realize your pose was a mistake and you want nothing so badly as to move. It's easy after ten minutes 'cause your body goes numb. ;-)

There were a couple artists sketching away. The organizers held a contest for best sketch and the prize winner won a nice $50. When the drawing portion of the evening finished around 11 pm a dance contest was held. Holly ended up winning for her sweet moves. We really let people know that we wore our sun glasses at night so we could rock you like a hurricane while being touched like a virgin. (I can't get these eighties songs out of my head!)

Yes, I'm dancing. Cross my heart.

I think I burned more calories dancing that night than during all my workouts for the month combined. Holy Dina my feet were killing me at the end of the night, but my thighs the next morning were worse! Sure signs of an awesome night out.

Miss Scarlet
