Vaudvillian Burlesque

The surprise show at The Cheer was a great success! We arrived, got changed and hit the stage. After a brief intro I was the first on, which I enjoy because it doesn't give much time for my nerves to build up. Once again I had my own personal cheering section (THANK-YOU FRIENDS <3) which totally floored me. It was my best and most flirtiest performance yet!

There's something about performing a routine in front of a crowd that practising on your own just doesn't account for. Audience interaction gives me that extra buzz, an adrenaline high, and having experienced it a couple times now with this routine I felt like I'd truly perfected it. Btw - that new garter belt? I'm SO in love with it. It's from Rockabetty which just opened up a store in Osborne Village. It's downstairs where The Crypt used to be.

It was so much fun to hang out with the burly girls again. Plus Amy Blaze, a knife swinging, fire eating vixen! I really, really want to learn how to fire dance now. However, the fact that I have trouble even juggling may suggest that that's a bad idea ...

Chris Mysterion was phenomenal to work with. He kept us entertained back stage with stories of other performers and burlesque shows he's met and been in. His show was fantastic. It centers on illusions. People like to have their minds tricked but they also like to know how it's being done. Chris explained every step of the way what he was looking for- a catch in his volunteers voice, looking away at certain suggestions, which gave him the answers to his questions. However, I couldn't catch most of the tell tale signs and to his audience, despite telling us how he does it, his tricks were still magic!

Also thank-you to the wonderful Miss La Muse for organizing such a great show! There was a wonderful review of it in the Free Press. It's the second time my sassy self has been mentioned in print. (Scroll down)

First Annual Swords and Sabres!

The day started out raining hard. There was thunder grumbling almost constantly and the rain was icy cold. I wasn't so sure about the rain but got ready for the first ever Swords and Sabres festival in the hopes that it would clear up. After jumping out of the shower I put on my full length, black velvet renaissance dress with it's burgundy ribbon decoration. I had bought it when I was in Grade 10 and my highschool took my grade to Quebec on it's annual french excursion. Since then I've worn it almost every Christmas and for a couple Hallowe'ens but I've been wishing for ages to attend a Renaissance fair! I thought I'd have to travel to Illinois or New York to find one.

While I had been in the shower the rain had stopped which was wonderful. However by the time I arrived at Coronation Park the sun had come out and everything was a steamy, humid mess. I was really regretting wearing my dress, velvet is heavy! But the weather was really mercurial and quickly cooled off into a perfect spring day for an outdoor event.

One of the few photos of myself I've been able to find so far. Thanks to Holly Halftone for her photography skills!

I met up with the Drawn and Plastered crew in front of Raven's Comics booth. They had laid out a wooden platform to walk and pose on which was brilliant as a few hours in the grass had been churned into muck. Somewhere along the way the crew had acquired a Captain Jack Sparrow who, in the six hours that I was there, never broke character once! He was so popular he became a mascot for every child under the age of 8, tugging on his arms and demanding pictures. I think the parents were incredibly happy that he kept his pirate language PG for the kiddies!

Some of the D&P Crew, plus miscellaneous pirates!

The way the booths were set up was a little bit like comic con though everything had a piratey steampunk theme. Even more impressive than the booths was the entertainment. The Illuminari bellydance troupe had their own tent and did a lively performance (which Captain Jack crashed and 'drunkenly' joined in!) There was also a fire eater and his bellydancing companion. Last but not least there were two historical reenactment groups: The Barony of Castle Rouge and The Vikings Vinland. The Barony (which is run through the University of Manitoba) had a booth focusing on period clothing and a recipe book of meals that would have been commonly prepared. The Vikings took their reenactment one step further and set up a battle ground with men (and women) in full armor and wooden shields duking it out in true warrior fashion.

Some badass peeps! All photos found on the Swords and Sabres Facebook page and copyrights to their photographers.

Despite the fact that I've only been able to find a couple pictures of myself at the festival, Meg and I were being stopped every few steps so people could take photos of us. I absolutely loved her costume which included a waist training corset (she'd nipped in her waist by almost 7"!) and a gorgeous bustle skirt by Retroscope Fashions. Don't try tightening your own corset by that much at home, boys and girls! With all the corset related questions she was asked Meg was a little like an infomercial for them. Waist training takes dedication and needs to be done slowly and with the proper tools to avoid injury. If done properly there's no damage, permanent or otherwise, and when the corset is taken off the body goes back to it's original proportions. (I'm really inspired to start waist training myself ... but that's another post.)

And last but not least, thank goodness for the hotdog stand! He really must have made a fortune because all the excitement really stokes the appetite. ;-)  If you missed out on this years festival fear not! It was a rounding success and I have much faith that this will become an annual tradition. Hopefully we'll see you out next year!

Rhymes With Orange

I had too much fun in the exchange district today! I got especially mischievous when I popped into Rhymes With Orange which is across from Ragpickers. Rhinestones, anyone?

Cat's eyes! Meow!

And my new sailor hat with the black feather fan my Mom previously picked up for me. I've got the strongest urge to do a photoshoot with both of those items.

More Thrifting!

My Mom is awesome! Last weekend she dropped into a bunch of different yardsales while I was at work. More often than not she brings home goodies for me and my sister rather than herself. She surprised me with these when I got home:

My sister got a matching dress/beach cover up.

A large jack o' lantern mug with ghosts on the handle, a black boa, bronze body glitter and a black feather fan. Everything a dollar or less. Win!

She told me she had been telling the yardsale people that her daughter was a burlesque dancer. :D If your Mom believes you can do it then you know you can.

A's Awesome Yardsale

YARDSALES: THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT. ZOMG. (Pictures of goodies I bought will be sprinkled throughout the text even though they won't correlate to what I'm writing about. It's just prettier that way.)

Weeks prior to the sale A had been giving out little leaflets with the yardsale info on it. They said quirky things like "Compulsive shopper making room for more shopping!" and "This was more like a pop up store than a yard sale. -Future Satisfied Yard Sale Customer". She plastered signs on signposts, in store windows and on boulevards. She made a facebook event group and she pimped the hell out of it. If you're going to have a yardsale this is how you do it!

My treasures include: A treasure box, clear glass bottles, a martini stamp, a pencil sharpener, mini decorative frames, four little animal print magnets, a string of sequins, a skeleton magnet, a grommet puncher and a pencil box.

I was up at 6:30, and after that 80's Skylab party too ... I picked up muffins at 7 am and stuck a sign on a busy corner while I was there before making my way to A's place to help set up. There were at least half a dozen neon signs on her house, lawn, boulevard and trees marking her place as the location. One sign on the front lawn had a heart on the back that said thanks for coming. Conscientious A, she thinks of everything.

My two little glass jars are on the right. On the left is a craft I'm going to do with them for Hallowe'en. It involved taking parchment paper and calligraphy-ing poison and witch's brew labels to turn them into creepy decorations. I may add orange or black ribbon to the tops as well.

Despite numerous signs saying the sale didn't start until 9 am there were a lot of people rapping on the fence, interrupting our progress and asking to be let in early. Dear Readers: If a sign says something doesn't open until 9 am and you're there early then take a f*cking hike, walk around the block, and come back at 9 AM. It's the polite thing to do.

This pencil sharpener is the coolest! It almost looks like a mini music box. It's got a teeny drawer that catches the shavings and pulls out so you can throw them away! The pencil slot is in the back.

There were fifteen tables and too many tubs of stuff to count. We still had to place more than a few items on the ground in front of overflowing displays. The group of helper monkeys managed to get the tables sorted into books (my section, mwuaha!), jewelry, home decor, kitchen, arts and crafts, accessories, games,  and music and dvd's. SO. MUCH. STUFF. At quarter to nine there were at least thirty people in the front yard waiting for the gate to open. When the gate was opened the yard was immediately full. People had to squeeze by just to get from table to table, and this was no small yard!

A grommet punching kit. If you put a grommet at the tip of your pastie and fasten the tassel between the two metal rings it gives the tassel more freedom to twirl! A great tip given to me by Miss LaMuse.

At one point I overheard one guy say "they should open up another cashier", like we were some sort of chain store and not a local yard sale. Good grief. It's a good thing I wasn't actually being paid to work there because laughing and walking away from customers is generally frowned upon. We had a pretty good set up though. A was the main payment taker and haggler (haggle-e?), there were 2 baggers, one cash lady, I was taking payments for smaller armloads of stuff, a couple of A's friends wandered making sure there was no obvious theft or upsets and A's giant scotsman of a husband stood at the gate intimidating people into paying for their goodies. :D

An Italian leather donkey wine bottle. It was too bizarre to pass up! I think I'm going to rinse it out and put some fake flowers in it. Although, a headless donkey flower vase might be even weirder.

By 11 am over half of the stuff had been scooped up.

I should mention that A is my cousin so over the course of the morning I saw two aunts, an uncle, my grandma, a couple cousins and my Mom. It was like a family reunion. I was lucky enough to catch a ride with my Mom to bring home all my newfound treasures (of course helper monkeys couldn't help but riffle through things as we set up).

I bought styrofoam heads. Why did I buy styrofoam heads? a) Because I think it's evident by now that I like strange things and b) because they store and showpiece some of my masks and headbands very handily. Or should I say headily?

My Mom and I stopped at a second sale on the way home at Trinitarian United Church. It didn't have nearly as neat stuff but I did find these two items:

I'm going to add lace and buttons and doorknobs and whatever else I fancy and turn that purse into a steampunk masterpiece. I'm also super stoked about my new Dictionary! It's got everything from Middle Earth to Narnia and a ton of places I've never even heard of.

Not pictured here but also scooped up is the DVD Kickass and a faux snakeskin headband. Oh, the most I paid for any of these items was $2 for the purse. Everything else was a dollar or less. Garage sales, yard sales and thriftstores are the best places to find unexpected gems for amazing prices. If you missed out on these sales you're still in luck! Yardsale season is upon us. Just walk around your neighborhood on a sunny weekend and you're bound to bump into a couple. It's the best way to shop.

Miss Scarlet

Gil Elvgren - Pinup Girls

I stumbled upon the most delightful article today. The Retronaut, an online encyclopedia of historical pictures, articles and miscellaneous tidbits, had a before and after view of the models Gil Elvgren used to create his sensational pin-ups. The differences and similarities are interesting to behold and all the more striking because the original pictures are in black and white. Here are a few of my favourites:

I would highly recommend everyone click here to see the full article featuring a dozen amazing pictures such as these. Seeing the old real life pin-up gals made my day.

80's Night at Skylab 17

Thursday evening I was sitting at home, thinking about how I didn't have any rad modelling stuff going on lately. Suddenly, lo and behold - a facebook status! Holly Halftone to the rescue! She had been contacted by a guy looking to incorporate Drawn and Plastered into his bachelor party. It was a last minute request. The theme was 80's and models were needed. As seems the case with most awesome things I was a few hours too late. She'd already found models willing to show up and be glamorous. I messaged her anyways. I love the idea behind D&P and thought hey- maybe sending a shout out will keep me on D&P's radar.

But what do you know, one of the models dropped out and Holly wondered if I could fill in!

Friday night I cabbed from work to Outworks Studio in the Exchange District where Holly Hui did some stunning hair styling. All photos were taken by the talented Holly Halftone.

It only took half a bottle of conditioner to get the knots out the next morning...
 Worth it ;)
A.J. and I "getting ready"

We were scheduled to pose from 8 - 9 pm. We scurried over to the Reagle Beagle to just make it on time. The night was slow to get started (it was dead, with the exception of the bachelor who seemed to have been having a good time for a while before we got there). To pass the time we adorned ourselves with glow sticks and played balloon volley ball.

We played around, posing for the camera and getting ready to hold poses for the artists the organizers promised were coming.

People wanted to take pictures with us - I was tickled (hot) pink!

At 10 we started our 5 minute sets. I went first. It seems, in general, that people are shy of going first, when really going first is actually the best. I volunteered right away - you get the best pick of the poses.

I could have stayed like this all night.

After everyone had done a 5 minute pose we held two group 15 minute poses. These were the hardest - at the five minute mark you realize your pose was a mistake and you want nothing so badly as to move. It's easy after ten minutes 'cause your body goes numb. ;-)

There were a couple artists sketching away. The organizers held a contest for best sketch and the prize winner won a nice $50. When the drawing portion of the evening finished around 11 pm a dance contest was held. Holly ended up winning for her sweet moves. We really let people know that we wore our sun glasses at night so we could rock you like a hurricane while being touched like a virgin. (I can't get these eighties songs out of my head!)

Yes, I'm dancing. Cross my heart.

I think I burned more calories dancing that night than during all my workouts for the month combined. Holy Dina my feet were killing me at the end of the night, but my thighs the next morning were worse! Sure signs of an awesome night out.

Saucily yours,
Miss Scarlet
